Everybody likes good movies and for many fans horror movies are an inescapable part of the cinematic repertoire. Occasionally, a horror movie is acknowledged as a superior piece of film making. Some people enjoy being frightened. But are all horror movies equally good? Unfortunately one superior horror movie is liable to spawn an inferior sequel (or half a dozen).  This is partly because it is easier to rework something successful than create something new.  There is also the continued temptation to try to squeeze more money out of a success and hope it can become a franchise. It's all about greed, really.

A good example of this is The Descent 2, which is a huge let down. The original was filled with truly startling moments like a tree breaking through a windshield at an unexpected time and skillfully exploited the characters' claustrophobia and paranoia as they were going truly mad with fear. There were even hints that the monsters were not real at all but figments of the heroine's own fevered imagination and sublimated rage. She found out her best friend had an affair with her husband. Since her husband is dead she takes her revenge on her friend. It also denied the audience the cliche of the lone survivor, the main character escaped, but did she? The sequel by its very existence destroys this ambiguity and undercuts the originality of its predecessor.

The plot is a continuation of the original. Sarah, a character presumed dead, seems to have escaped from the cave ... somehow. She startles a truck driver and is covered with blood that isn't hers. Unfortunately she has no memory of what happened. A suspicious sheriff who thinks maybe she knows what happened to her 'friends' leads a rescue team to search for more survivors and drags Sarah along back underground where the monsters are still hungry. She doesn't remember anything even after going back into the cave. Then she remembers but it's too late... And the sheriff had kept the mission a secret so no one knows where they are but one man. Will he notify the authorities in time?

Unfortunately rather than suspense and shocks, the bulk of the movie is one gross out after another. These scenes are really drastic. But they're not so frightening. High (or rather low) points include a rat crawling out of the mouth of a corpse and another corpse vomiting impossible amounts of blood over a helpless would be rescuer who's holding on to her as she dangles from a rope. There are couple of scary moments but they're too much like the first one. In the movie's absolute low point the director answers the unasked question "where do the monsters go to the bathroom?" It turns out they use a pond, into which Sarah and the new main character have fallen.

Hardcore horror fans will probably enjoy watching this. Despite the weakness of this movie The Descent 3 will surely appear. We all know how Hollywood likes to make sequels. Here, the deputy has escaped but is dragged back to the cave. Probably the next movie will be about the army going after the monsters. Although nothing good lasts in horror franchises quality also reappears at the most unpredictable times and sometimes sequels are better than the original, like Spiderman. Perhaps the third film in the series will be a worthy successor to the first. The concept has descended as far as it can go so the only way left is up. But then should it be made?
